Yea!! Yesterday, August 20, 2009, we came to an agreement with the City of Orlando (Florida) that puts us completely in charge of a program called "Meal Time." This is a program I started while working part time for the City. We call the people who deliver the food to residents "Food Angels."
We distribute fliers that tell people who may run out of Food Stamps toward the end of the month or who are economically challenged to telephone us if they want an application. The filled out applications go to a committee to determine if the applicants are eligible. There must be a unamious decision the individual applicant is eligible. Then, a 10 pound bag of non-perishable groceries is delivered free to their door during the last week of the month.
We get the food from a partner - Second Harvest Food Bank who is great to work with. We pick up the food from Second Harvest Food Bank and pay a very economical $.18 per pound. We bag the food and then our Food Angels deliver it to the recipients.
At our current level of food recipients our food costs are approximately $360 per month. We are now allowed to spread this program to all of Orange and Seminole Counties in Florida. Within four months we should increase our recipients to 1,000 per month. That will increase our food "bill" to about $1,800 per month. If you are the Food Angel you get more good fuzzies than you can imagine. The recipiens are so very glad to receive the food that they gush their thanks.
